Â
Theme: Water for Growth and Development in Africa
Introduction: Infrastructure is essential to Africa’s future development and nowhere more so than in the water sector. Increasingly, development of this resource is regarded as a critical element in ensuring sustainable social and economic growth as well as successful adaptation to climate change. The investment environment in Africa is presently fragmented and dispersed. Whilst there are admirable efforts at improving access to water supply and sanitation to address MDGs, investments in shared river basins to optimize regional benefits and generate public goods are not well-established and coordinated. One of the main challenges facing states and regions is the successful coordination of investment approaches through regional economic communities, national development planning and shared river basin institutions.
Â
Purpose and output: This session will highlight recent experience from a regional and national perspective and will address a core concern of the Summit: namely how to establish an effective and sustainable investment framework that can help countries and regions to develop their water resources sustainably and equitably. The session builds on work undertaken by the World Water Council (with support from the French Government), CSIR and others and will combine keynote presentations with a panel discussion and Q&A from the audience.
